Asphalt Tests - Making Our Roads and Buildings Better

Asphalt tests can truly save lives. This is because the tests that are performed on the product before it is mixed together, when it is mixed and then once it is poured and hardened will provide information as to how well it will withstand the pressure. Pressure may be form the elements of heat and cold or even from heavy trucks that roll over it constantly throughout the days, months and years. If there is not the proper amount of flexibility and power to withstand the pressure, there could be grave consequences. Cracks and holes are signs of weakness and once those are seen, testing may be too late, but getting it done could possibly save your or someone else's life.

One of the most common asphalt tests done is the beam test. With this type of test, a complete analysis can be done of a roadway. This works by having the equipment at the actual testing site. Deflection or the amount of movement there is when weight is pressed to the ground in any given location is tested. This is done by sending a beam across the surface of the road and while vehicles drive over the beam, the deflection is calculated. This allows the analyst to determine how much wear or how bad the defects are within the asphalt.

Another of the asphalt tests is a ductility test. This test will show an analyst how much the asphalt can be stretched before it eventually breaks. If an asphalt road or structure does not have the proper amount of ductility, cracks begin to develop which in turn cause a weakness in the road or structure. This test is used not only in the laboratory in the initial research stages, but also when testing is need to be done on site at highways and roadways as well as construction sites.

Other asphalt tests include checking for the overall continuity as well as ensuring that once a product leaves the facility that it will provide exactly what is expect of it. When a quality product such as asphalt is made properly, it can withstand the weight of semis driving over it as well as the fluctuation of temperature that occurs throughout the year. Of course, everything wears down over time and this is the reason why testing on site is needed and is done regularly. Without testing of asphalt, there would be no way to fix damages that are invisible to eye.

Asphalt & Concrete Facts:

Asphalt & Concrete are are used around the world as construction materials. The major difference between Asphalt & Concrete is that asphalt is made by mixing something called aggregate with bitumen. Concrete on the other hand is made by missing aggregate material with cement binder, the mixture is then left to harden and forms a rock like substance. Both Asphalt & Concrete are used in various construction tasks and there are various asphalt testing machines.
